For this week’s blog post, we were told to apply the ten ideas we talked about in class on Wednesday to the UNCG campus. We are supposed to hypothesize how each of these ten ideas has been expressed in material form.
Space: a continuous area or expanse that is free, available, or unoccupied. The group that talked about space in class mentioned what the Acropolis and Xianyang Palace were used for. I think the space of the campus is very clear, and the entrances are very important because UNCG signs mark them. It is clear where the campus beings and ends and that the space is used for educational purposes. Within the campus, the space is then divided into a space for education buildings and a space for buildings for students to live in.
Power: the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. I think power and hierarchy of buildings is show in a couple of buildings on UNCG campus. The School of Education building seems very important and powerful because it is at the end of College Avenue, which is at the center of campus. When students are walking to class or anyone is walking through campus, it is hard to miss this building because its position shows that it is a very important building on campus. Also, I think the height of the library gives it power. It rises high above all of the other buildings on campus and could symbolize that knowledge has power above everything else.
Principles: a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for a system of belief or behavior or for a chain of reasoning. I think a strong belief in this campus and any campus is that education comes above everything else. With that, I also think the university puts an importance in reaching out to the community.
Precedent: an earlier event or action that is regarded as an example or guide to be considered in subsequent similar circumstances. Precedent is apparent nearly everywhere on UNCG’s campus. It is in the columns on the facade of the buildings, the integrity of the institution, the way classes are taught, the athletic program, and so many other things.
Order: the arrangement or disposition of people or things in relation to each other according to a particular sequence, pattern, or method. Our campus is arranged by academics, living spaces, and athletics. Depending on which side you enter the campus, you will experience one of these sections in a different way.

Experience: an event or occurrence that leaves an impression on someone. For the experience of UNCG, I tried to remember what I thought the first time I drove and walked around campus. While driving, I would try to find a way to get through all of campus in my car but was unable to because there aren’t any roads you can take. That makes it seem that there is something special or important at the center of campus that you can only experience by walking. As you walk through campus, you experience the academic side and living sides. Also, College Avenue leaves an impression. It is clearly the center of campus and is surrounded by buildings on any side of it. Looking from one side to the other, you can see so much happening and all the people that make up this campus.
Size: the relative extent of something; a thing’s overall dimensions or magnitude; how big something is. The size of the library is the most prominent thing on UNCG’s campus. It towers above every other building, but it is also the plainest. They aren’t nearly as many details, but it is much larger than anything else. I would think the Sullivan Science building and Eberhart Building cover the most surface area when they are connected, and are also relatively tall.
Technology: the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes. Like precedent, examples of technology are everywhere. In the structure of the buildings, laptops, elevators, cars and buses, student i.d.’s, the way teaches present information, and so much more.
Surface: the outside part of uppermost layer of something. Nearly all of the buildings on campus have a brick exterior. Surface is the first impression you get of the building, along with other details. Using one surface on everything then using another on one or a select group would put more prominence on that one or group.
Scale: the relative size or extent of something. There are a lot of different scales in the different buildings and columns on campus. Also, different walkways and roads have a variety of scales. College Avenue is the biggest and most used walkway on campus, and the ones leading off of it are small and seem less significant. Also, the scale of the columns on different buildings is very different. The ones on the School of Education are much larger than that of the Alumni House.
